The earliest song I remember hearing was ‘You are My Sunshine’, sung by my mother accompanied by strumming on her folk guitar. Through my childhood the folk movement permeated summer camp and school songs, and the few radio stations we could pick up in rural Vermont. “You Are My Sunshine” sung by Anne Murray As I got a little older, the Beatles, Pink Floyd, the Who, and other rock legends entered my life, along with bluegrass through a very talented local band that sometimes had jam sessions in my family’s garage.

Teenager had his first choir concert last night. I was pleased to discover that his high school has as rich and beautiful a vocal arts program as the one I went to some nearly thirty years ago. Choir music is part of who I am today and why I do what I do today, and I have high hopes it will do the same for him. I’ve always thought that Israel ‘Iz’ Kamakawiwo’ole’s version of Over the Rainbow is a response to the original version from the Wizard of Oz, saying, ‘Yes, it is beautiful and wonderful here. But ‘here’ is anywhere you are, any time you happen to be there. You’re already over the rainbow. All you have to do is open your eyes. Listen to them both yourself and see what I mean: Judy Garland: Iz: (and on that note, the use of ‘Over the Rainbow’ as a sort of theme song for the LGBTQ rights movement makes me giggle and chortle and chuckle…

I like International fusions in general. Now might be a good time to mention that other than white tuna sashimi, my favorite sushi involves lox and avocado. To my mind, the deep infusion of traditional Japanese instruments and vocal stylings to this American rock standard are just amazing and beautiful.  Much better than a poke in the eye. Enjoy the music!
